  • The Heritage Rose-Comb Rhode Island White is a rare American treasure first developed in 1888. Unlike their more famous cousins, the Rhode Island Reds, these birds are pure white with a distinctive rose comb—making them especially hardy in cold climates.

Bred as a true dual-purpose heritage chicken, they balance excellent egg production with a strong frame suitable for meat. Rhode Island Whites are known for their reliability, adaptability, and calm personality, making them a perfect fit for homesteads, small farms, and backyard flocks.

These are larger sized birds so keep this in mind when designing and acclimating to your housing and conditions.

Because they’re listed as a watch-status breed with The Livestock Conservancy, every bird raised helps preserve vital genetic diversity and keeps this piece of poultry history alive. Choosing Rhode Island Whites means you’re not just adding birds to your flock—you’re part of a movement to safeguard heritage breeds for future generations.

  • The Rhode Island White originated in 1888 via the efforts of Mr. J. Alonzo Jocoy of Peacedale, Rhode Island. He developed the breed by crossing White Wyandottes with Partridge Cochins and Rose Comb White Leghorns. In 1903, Mr. Jocoy made the breed recognized by the general public and provided people on the market. The breed continued to be developed and improved in order that it extra intently resembled the Rhode Island Pink’s brick-like physique form. This distinctive form helped to stop the breed from being confused with White Wyandottes or White Plymouth Rock chickens. In 1922 the Rhode Island White was admitted to the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection through the nationwide convention in Knoxville, Tennessee, that 12 months. The Rhode Island White gained some reputation within the US up till the 1960’s, at which period their numbers declined. The breed by no means got the overwhelming reputation that the extra well-known Rhode Island Red chickens have achieved.

  • At Sugar Feather Farm, we believe nutrition is the foundation of a healthy, thriving bird. We raise our Rhode Island White pullets on a carefully balanced non-GMO, high-quality feed program designed to support every stage of growth:

    • Chick Stage: Start with Sugar Feather Farm Chick Starter for strong early development.

    • Grow-Out Phase: Transition to our Grower Feed as they mature, ensuring proper muscle and bone growth.

    • Laying Phase: Once they near point of lay, move to Mixed Flock Layer for optimal egg production and continued health.

We also recommend adding our Oil of Oregano to drinking water as a natural immune booster, and supplementing with the Vita Boost Kit to support gut health, feather quality, and overall vitality.

This feeding program mimics the way we raise birds here on the farm—focused on longevity, resilience, and the well-being of each pullet. When you order from us, you’re not only receiving a heritage bird, but also a roadmap for raising them the Sugar Feather Farm way.
