Fulfillment, Wait Times & Availability

Sugar Feather Farm operates as a small-scale, ethical breeding farm. Fulfillment times can vary widely and are based on animal welfare, seasonality, flock health, and natural production cycles. We strive to get your order to you as soon as possible, but patience is often necessary – especially for rare breeds or out-of-season orders.

Seasonal Ordering

Many of our products (particularly live birds and hatching eggs) are seasonal by nature. We recognize four general seasons for order fulfillment:

  • Spring: March – May

  • Summer: June – September

  • Fall: October – November

  • Winter: Limited live animal availability, though merchandise and other non-live products are available year-round.

Live animal orders usually ramp up in spring and summer when birds are naturally breeding and hatching. We typically open up spring ordering for the following year around November of the prior year, allowing customers to plan ahead and secure their spot in the queue.

Seasonal Ordering – Hatching Eggs: Availability of hatching eggs is highly dependent on natural laying cycles. Certain species (for example, guinea fowl, turkeys, and geese) only lay during specific times of the year. Sugar Feather Farm will only fulfill hatching egg orders during each species’ natural laying season to ensure egg viability and freshness. Orders for hatching eggs are generally fulfilled on a first-paid, first-served basis, but keep in mind that timing depends on factors like seasonal availability, weather, flock health, and egg production rates. For many species, collection of hatching eggs to start fulfilling new orders begins in March (weather and bird willing). By purchasing hatching eggs, you acknowledge that fulfillment timing is contingent on natural cycles and cannot be guaranteed for a specific date.

Raised / Coop-Ready Birds: If you order juvenile or adult birds (“starter” birds), the minimum fulfillment time is typically around 3 months (to allow the birds to reach appropriate age). Large orders (approximately 6–7 or more birds) may be fulfilled in stages rather than all at once, because we will not hold birds indefinitely just to complete a large order. We will communicate with you regarding any staggered pickup or shipment. We accept breed and gender preferences for started birds and will do our best, (Sexing accuracy for juveniles is about 90%, see our Sexing policy below.)

High-Demand Breeds: Certain breeds that are very rare, slow to reproduce, or extremely popular may have extended wait times. Examples include some heritage or rare breeds that consistently have backorders or smaller farm flocks. We recommend placing orders or pre-orders as early as possible for high-demand breeds. During peak season, the wait for these breeds can be longer than our normal estimated timeframes. Sugar Feather Farm is not obligated to meet standard timeframes for high-demand breeds due to their rarity and the limited supply; we prioritize fulfilling earlier paid orders first. We appreciate your understanding and patience for these special cases, and we will communicate with you regarding status updates. (Feel free to reach out to our team with questions or to check on a pre-order for a high-demand breed.)

Processing Times By Product Type

(The following are general guidelines – all timeframes are estimates and not guaranteed.)

Spring Season Wait Time

It's important to note that the Spring season generally has a longer wait time due to the higher demand and other influencing factors. We want to assure our customers that we are dedicated to ensuring the well-being and health of every fowl that leaves our farm. Rest assured that we strive to provide the best experience for our customers and our feathered friends.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any further questions or need more information about our order fulfillment process.

Hatching Eggs

We usually ship hatching eggs on Tuesdays. During very busy periods or in response to weather/flock conditions, we may adjust shipping days. We only ship freshly collected eggs that have been handled carefully to maximize viability. Keep in mind that even with careful timing, factors like the hens’ laying schedules, fertility rates, and postal transit can affect when your eggs go out. We will not ship eggs that are too old or compromised.

Live Babies

(Chicks, Ducklings, Poults, Keets, etc.): We carefully monitor all live baby birds to ensure they are healthy and strong enough for travel. In many cases, we do not ship day-old chicks – certain breeds of chickens, waterfowl, turkey poults, guineas, and quail chicks are kept for an extra week or two at our farm to build strength before shipping. (Some breeds, especially bantams or delicate breeds like Seramas and Silkies, are never shipped as newborns under any circumstance.) The exact shipping age and timing will vary by species and breed; please refer to the specific breed’s product listing for any notes on minimum age to ship.

Starter Birds

(Juveniles & Adults): Orders for older birds require longer lead times. We must allow chicks to grow out to juvenile or adult stage. In select cases, customers can request a specific sex (pullet or cockerel) for starter birds – we determine sex using visual cues and behavior with roughly 90% accuracy (no invasive methods). Availability of started birds depends on our flock’s growth and development, which can be affected by the time of year and overall flock health. We will not rush or compromise animal welfare to meet a date – the birds come first.

Merchandise Supplies & Feed

Orders for merchandise (such as equipment, apparel) or feed and supplements are typically processed more quickly. In-stock items usually ship within a few business days. However, if combined with live animal orders, they might ship separately for safety and efficiency. If any supply item is on backorder, we will notify you with an adjusted timeline or split the shipment.

General Factors: All timelines above are estimates only. Many factors can extend processing times, including extreme weather, natural seasonal slowdowns in laying or hatching, lower fertility rates at certain times, unanticipated flock health issues, or surges in demand. Sugar Feather Farm will always prioritize the health and well-being of the animals over speed. We appreciate your patience during any delays. We promise to communicate with you and keep you informed of your order status, especially if unforeseen issues arise.

Farm Pickups, Visits & Conduct

Sugar Feather Farm welcomes customers for pre-arranged farm pickups and by-appointment visits. Because we run a biosecure facility and a working farm (with limited staffing), we have strict rules for anyone coming onto the property. These policies are in place to protect our animals, our visitors, and our family. By scheduling a farm visit or pickup, you agree to the following terms of conduct:

Appointment Requirement

No drop-in visitors. You must schedule an appointment for any farm pickup of birds or eggs, or for any farm tour/visit. Please do not show up unannounced, as we may not be available to assist you and unplanned visitors cannot be accommodated. This helps us manage foot traffic and adhere to biosecurity protocols. Appointments can be scheduled by contacting us or using the booking link on our website. We often post available tour dates/times or allow scheduling for pickups via our site. If you have an appointment, please arrive on time or notify us of any delays/cancellations.

Restricted Areas

No Unauthorized Entry: For biosecurity and safety reasons, visitors are not permitted beyond designated areas. The areas where our birds are housed (coops, pens, breeding areas behind fencing) are strictly off-limits to visitors. We have signage and fencing to mark these restricted zones. There are no exceptions to this policy. This protects our flocks from outside pathogens and also keeps visitors safe from potential hazards on a working farm. We kindly ask that you respect these boundaries at all times. Attempting to bypass barriers or enter off-limit areas will result in immediate termination of the visit and you will be asked to leave.

Biosecurity Measures For Visitors

You may be asked to adhere to certain biosecurity measures when visiting (especially during times of heightened disease concern, such as avian influenza outbreaks). For example, we might provide a foot bath or ask you to wear disposable boot covers before entering areas near our birds. We require that you wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals) for safety, and preferably shoes that are clean (ideally not the same shoes you wear around other birds if you have your own flock). Hand sanitizer may be provided. Please follow any instructions our staff gives you regarding sanitation – these measures are critical to protect animal health.

No Contact With Birds Unless Allowed

In general, we do not allow visitors to handle our animals during tours or visits, except when you are picking up your own purchased birds (or in a supervised setting). Do not reach into pens or attempt to pet or pick up birds without explicit permission. This is for your safety and the animals’ safety. Chicks and hens can be fragile or easily stressed, and roosters or geese can sometimes be aggressive in protecting their territory. During a farm tour, we will indicate what is allowed.

No Unauthorized Photography/Video

We maintain a policy of no unauthorized photography or video recording on the farm, particularly in restricted areas. You are welcome to take basic snapshots of the public or display areas or the birds you are purchasing, but do not film or photograph our breeding setups, detailed layouts, or biosecurity measures without asking. We have intellectual property in our breeding program and also privacy concerns. If you are unsure whether you can take a photo, please ask. Under no circumstances should you film staff or other customers without consent. We reserve the right to ask you to refrain from taking pictures if we feel it is intrusive. (Note: Any images or footage you do capture must be for personal use only; see Intellectual Property section for further restrictions on use.)

General Conduct

We expect all visitors to behave respectfully and calmly. Do not chase animals or make excessive loud noises. Children must be supervised closely at all times (and must also follow all rules). We reserve the right to end a visit early if a visitor (adult or child) is not complying with instructions, is putting themselves or animals at risk, or is being disruptive or abusive in any way. Please also understand that smoking or vaping is not allowed on our farm property for health and safety reasons (dry straw and barns are fire hazards, and smoke can harm animals).

Consequences of Rule Violation

If any visitor fails to follow the above rules or any instructions given during the visit, Sugar Feather Farm may take action including immediate removal from the property. If you were picking up an order and violate our policies (for instance, trespassing in restricted areas or harassing staff), your order may be forfeited without refund as a result of the breach. We take our policies seriously for good reason. By coming to the farm, you agree that our staff’s decisions on these matters are final. We truly hope to never have an issue and that everyone has a pleasant experience.

What You Can Expect

We love to share our farm with those who are genuinely interested! During an appointment or tour, you can observe our beautiful variety of poultry from safe, designated viewing areas. We’ll happily answer your questions about breeds, care, and operations. If you are picking up birds, we will bring them to you and often allow you to examine them closely before taking them home. Our aim is for you to enjoy your visit while also keeping our flock and visitors safe.

If you would like to visit the farm without placing an order (just to see it or learn), we do offer farm tours and educational visits by arrangement (often for a small fee or donation). These also must be scheduled in advance. Keep in mind that live birds or hatching eggs may not be available for sale on the spot during a casual visit – those require pre-ordering. But you’re welcome to tour, ask questions, and see how we operate. Just let us know your interests when booking the appointment.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation with our farm rules. Your compliance helps us maintain a healthy environment for the animals and an enjoyable experience for all visitors.

High Demand Breeds

Certain breeds in our inventory experience higher demand due to their popularity, rarity, flock size, or egg lay rates. As a result, we prioritize the assessment of orders already placed and determine when we can fulfill them before working on collecting eggs for hatching.

For hatching eggs, once we have assessed the orders, we begin the process of collecting eggs. After setting the eggs, it takes a minimum of 22 days till hatch for quail, 20 days for ducks, turkeys, and guineas, and 29 days for geese. Subsequently, we allow a week for the newborns to acclimate. If there are orders ahead in the queue, those will be filled first to ensure fairness and efficiency in our process.

During peak seasons, the wait time for these high demand breeds might be longer than usual, as the farm is not obliged to abide by the normal timeframes for these breeds due to their popularity and demand. Therefore, we recommend that pre-ordering the high demand breeds is a good idea. This allows us to prioritize your order when the peak season arrives, ensuring that your order is processed first.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to fulfill orders for these high demand breeds. If you have any questions or would like to place a pre-order, please feel free to reach out to our team.
