  • Swedish Flower Hens, or Blommehöns, are a visually stunning and practical landrace breed originating from southern Sweden. Known for their unique “flowered” plumage—feathers tipped in white or black—these chickens are true individuals. No two birds have the same pattern, making them a colorful and eye-catching addition to any flock.

This breed is prized for its hardiness, strong egg production, and natural camouflage, which makes them excellent foragers in a free-range setting. While not the cuddliest breed, Swedish Flower Hens are confident, self-assured, and slightly higher-ranking in the pecking order. They’re calm and observant, not flighty or nervous, and they coexist well in mixed flocks.

At Sugar Feather Farm, we raise our Swedish Flower Hens with our custom designed Non-GMO feed, herbal health support, and plenty of space and love to forage and thrive. These starter pullets and cockerels are between 6-10 weeks old and are healthy and strong, ready to integrate into your farm or homestead.

  • Swedish Flower Chicken, (Skånsk blommehöna), got its name due to the speckles or “flowers” on the tips of their feathers. It is an ancient landrace, a Heritage Breed, which was first mentioned in folklore literature more than 300 years ago. It is likely, that the Romans brought chickens to Sweden and these birds then developed into the landrace breed we know today. Swedish Flower Hens are the largest native chicken breed in Sweden, developed organically over generations in the rural villages of Eslöv, Tofta, and Skåne. As a landrace breed, they weren’t artificially selected for specific traits—they adapted to survive harsh winters, predators, and limited resources.

By the 1980s, the breed had almost vanished. Fortunately, dedicated efforts uncovered and preserved flocks in remote areas, leading to a global revival. Today, Swedish Flower Hens are sought after by breeders and hobbyists alike for their heritage genetics, hardiness, and breathtaking diversity in appearance.

  • We recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switching to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed.

We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.
