NEW FOR 2026
The Pita Pinta Asturiana is the only chicken breed native to Asturias, Spain—an ancient heritage breed nearly lost in the 20th century until restoration efforts began in the 1980s. Veterinarian and biologist Dr. Rafael Eguiño Marcos identified surviving birds and established the modern breed standard. By 2004, the Pita Pinta was officially recognized as an endangered Spanish breed.
At Sugar Feather Farm, we raise the Roxa (Red Mottled) variety exclusively. Birds display warm orange–to–deep golden mottling with white tips, and each bird’s pattern is unique. Their gentle nature, curious behavior, and instant human-friendliness make them one of the most personable breeds we’ve ever worked with.
Breed Highlights
• Calm, sweet, extremely people-friendly
• Large, beautiful cream eggs with a matte bloom
• Hardy in cold northern climates—excellent for Vermont
• Enjoy shelters/indoor spaces more than many breeds
• Reliable foragers without requiring large acreage
• Roosters are notably gentle and non-aggressive

The Pita Pinta is culturally significant in Asturias, where “pita” means hen and “pinta” means painted—a nod to their striking pattern.
After decades of industrial agriculture nearly eliminated the breed, conservation efforts revived it. Since 2003, breeders have maintained the Herd Book and hosted exhibitions, while genetic mapping was completed in 2015 to further conservation goals.By choosing this breed, you're helping preserve an endangered European heritage line.

We recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switching to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed.
We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.
