  • The Easter Egger chicken is a great all-around chicken for backyards, homesteads, farms, schools, and almost in any situation really. They are typically friendly and hardy making them a great choice for a family flock, however, personalities can vary. In the flock hierarchy, they are in the middle so can do well with all birds. They do great in all weather conditions and can tolerate the harsh weather of Vermont. We would say they are very adaptable, they do well in confinement. They lay a great number of eggs over the year and our birds tend to be large so could be considered dual-purpose.

  • The “Easter Egger” chicken originally came from Chile in South America, discovered by the Araucana Indians, which is really the Araucana Chicken. They are not a breed — but a variety of chicken that doesn’t conform to any standard, which is totally ok because they are just an all-around great chicken! We would say they are one of the most popular chickens. The true Araucana chicken is rumpless (tailless), has a small curling tuft of feathers next to each ear, and comes in different pure color types. The Easter Egger chicken is different because they have a full beard under the beak rather than a tuft and have a tail rather than rumpless and don’t have pure color types (sometimes no tuft or beard). The color of their egg shells varies from pale blue to various shades of green and light brownish/pink eggs.

  • We recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switch to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed.

We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.
